A Brimbank Young Achiever makes the finals

Kevin Singh, Managing Director of Brimyank is one of 10 finalists to be interviewed for the 2009 Deakin University Secondary Business Person of the Year award.
Natalie Eddy volunteer mentor of the Brimyank project said Kevin has only lived in Australia for the past two years.  “He has accepted his role of Managing Director of Brimyank with great responsibility and is learning many valuable business skills from the YAA program.  He will be a valuable asset to any employer in the future.”
Students in Brimbank, involved in the Young Achievement Australia Business Skills Program, launched their company ‘Brimyank’ in August this year. Students involved in the project sold pencils made from recycled newspaper at a cost of $2 to raise the start-up-costs of their business. The pencils were scented with essential oils and decorated.

Directors were elected to run the company and sold their product as part of the program.
At the end of the program the company is liquidated and dividends, capital, and any profits that are made are then returned to shareholders.

The Young Achievement Australia Business Skills Program is run by Young Achievement Australia, a not for profit organisation committed to developing the potential of young Australians. The Deakin University Secondary Business Person of the Year Award recognises the individual who has the most wide-ranging and comprehensive understanding of the nature, scope and demands of their business and are able to demonstrate their grasp of the requirements of establishing a business.

The final interviews for the final ten candidates will take place on Thursday 8  October, all self-nominated participants will be judged by a panel of business people.

All finalists will be formally recognised—and winners announced—at the end-of-year gala event: The 2009 Victoria University Young Achievement Australia Student Business Awards scheduled for the evening of Thursday 29 October.

Young Achievement Australia will fly the winner to Sydney in November to represent Victoria at the National Awards, later televised on Network Ten.
Brimbank City Council has provided $5000 in sponsorship towards the Young Achievement Australia Business Skills Program this year. Brimbank has sponsored the Young Achievement Australia Business Skills Program since 1998.
