Brimbank and Police join forces to crack down on hoons
Brimbank City Council has launched a new campaign with Victoria Police to control the issue of hoon behaviour on the municipality’s roads.
The campaign involves Council targeting specific hoon hotspots by mailing fliers to residents who live in those areas, the fliers ask residents to help keep streets safe by recording details about the offenders such as the make of the car, the times hoons are spotted, the location and any damage caused. Residents are also provided with the Crime Stoppers Hoon Line: 1800 333 000.
The Brimbank Hoonline was operating from April 2005 to February 2009. There were 1956 calls received, 86 warning letters sent, 75 offenders personally visited and warned, 87 offenders prosecuted at court, 21 Penalty Notices issued and 7 offenders referred for Diversion Programs.
From January to August 2009, Brimbank Police seized 94 vehicles under the Vehicle Impoundment Legislation, 24 for improper use (burnouts), 57 for excessive speeding, 5 careless driving, 7 for police evasion and 1 for disqualified driving.
